Garage Door Clearance Calculator: Check Headroom & Sideroom
How to Measure Garage Door Clearance
Proper clearance is crucial for a safe and functional garage door installation. Without enough space, the door, tracks, and springs cannot be installed correctly, leading to operational issues and safety hazards. Our calculator helps you verify two critical measurements: headroom and sideroom.
Headroom is the vertical space from the top of the garage door opening to the lowest point of the ceiling or obstruction above it. This space is needed for the door, tracks, and spring system to operate.
Sideroom is the horizontal space from the side of the opening to the nearest wall or obstruction. This area is required for the vertical tracks that guide the door.
Use a tape measure to get precise dimensions. For headroom, measure from the top of the door jamb to the lowest point above it, which could be the ceiling, a pipe, or a beam. For sideroom, measure from the side of the door jamb to the wall. Enter these values into the calculator to see if you meet standard requirements or if you'll need special low-headroom hardware.
