How to Choose the Right Opener Power

Selecting a garage door opener with the correct horsepower is essential for the longevity and smooth operation of your door. An underpowered opener will strain to lift a heavy door, leading to premature wear and tear on the motor. An overpowered opener is unnecessary and more expensive.

Our calculator simplifies this decision. Just enter your door's dimensions and material. The tool estimates the door's weight and recommends the appropriate HP rating—1/2 HP for lightweight doors, 3/4 HP for standard double or wood doors, and 1 HP or more for heavy, oversized, or carriage-style doors.

To use the calculator, measure the width and height of your garage door in feet. Then, select the material that most closely matches your door. Common materials include lightweight aluminum, single-layer (non-insulated) steel, double or triple-layer (insulated) steel, fiberglass, and wood. Once you'veentered the information, the calculator will instantly recommend the minimum required horsepower.
